Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven's sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.

― Kurt Vonnegut, A Man Without a Country

When I paint I always have a plan.  But my plans often go awry.  I start to put a dab of color in a particular spot. But some force that I do not understand moves my hand to force the brush to touch down somewhere that I did not intend.  The result is always better than my original plan.  It is as if the idea of the painting is coming from somewhere else.  I am not the painter.  I am just a conduit.
