hydronetta days
Another thing that has inspired me as an artist is the quality of the light in the Greek islands. The British author and poet Lawrence Durrell once described the light of Greece as akin to the brightness in the eyes of the beloved when falling in love. This outrageous bit of hyperbole exactly catches my own feeling.
This painting is inspired by the Hydronetta bar on the island of Hydra in Greece.
I hope that everybody has at least one spot on Earth that is truly magical for them. For me it is this rather touristy bar on a beautiful island in the Aegean Sea. More than once have I sat on the deck of the Hydronetta and wept at the beauty of the sunset. Admittedly, I had probably just had a glass of Ouzo or two. But still—if I could pick the place where I would want to be when I die, it would be sitting on the deck of the Hydronetta, having a cocktail as I gaze in wonder at the blue blue sea.
